The Thames Valley District School Board recognizes that many of the learners who can benefit from its services are over the age of 21. Through its Adult and Continuing Education programs, the Board provides opportunities to these students. Courses and programs are designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for an adult to function in modern society.
Offerings include adult day school, continuing education credit/general interest courses, night school, international languages, Adult Literacty and Basic Skills, and English as a Second Language programs. Adult and Continuing Education is also responsible for drivers' education, and summer school for all Thames Valley students.
Many programs are offered in partnership with Human Resources Development Canada and/or with other social and government agencies.

The St. Thomas Adult Learning Centre offers year round services to clients in the Elgin County area. The main centre in St. Thomas, and satellite sites around the county, offer a wide variety of opportunities for adults. Located on a bus route and close to downtown, the Adult Learning Centre has become a hub for adults to retrain, upgrade skills, and achieve educational goals.
The Centre is open 8 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday. Counselling and credit assessments are available by appointment. There are four semesters from September to June, offering three courses a day. Each semester is nine weeks. The sixth semester in the summer offers two courses for six weeks.

Registration Information for Credit Courses
Registration for Day Classes occurs two weeks prior to the start of a semester. Students should call ahead to the office for a reistration appointment. Please bring a copy of your transcript outlining all your marks; 15 dollars cash, proof of citizenship or immigration papers.

Students presently enrolled in a secondary school may enroll with the permission of their principal. Courses offered, if sufficient enrollment, include: Computers, Mathematics, English and Keyboarding.
Business Certificate
Students may receive a Business Certificate upon completion of 8 business related credits.
Independent Self-Study Courses
Students may select a correspondence course that meets their diploma requirements. A quiet study area at the centre is provided and incorporated into a regular daily program. Attendance records are kept for support services. Part time students presently enrolled in a secondary school may, with permission from their principal, enroll in self-study courses. Introduction to Computers - If you're confused or intimidated by computers, this course is for you. The first time user is introduced to the world of personal computers. Topics include: computer terminolgy and the power of the personal computer. Six (6) hours of instruction. Fee: 80 dollars (includes manual).
Getting Started with Windows '98 - This course is designed for those who are new to Windows '98. Topics inclue: the start button and menu, mouse control, working with application windows, the task bar, the recycle bin, the control panel, file and folder management, using accessories (WordPad, Calculator, and Paint), using the clipboard, multi-tasking, my computer and more. Six (6) hours of instructions. Fee: 80 dollars (includes manual).
Corel WordPerfect 8 - Level 1 - Using word processing software, you will learn to key, edit, save and print professional looking documents such as: letters, memos, agendas, reports and tests. This course also covers file management, text formatting and document enhancements. Six (6) hours of instruction. Fee: 80 dollars (includes manual).
Microsoft Word 2000 - This course introduces the most widely used business and industry word processing software. You will learn to key, edit, save and print professional looking documents such as: letters, memos, agendas, reports and tests. Microsoft Excel 2000 - This course is designed to provide an overview of the basic commands, functions and capabilities of this powerful spreadsheet software. Learn to enter, edit, format and print information in a spreadsheet. Enhance the worksheets with fonts, borders, formatting and use built in functions. View different parts of a spreadsheet simultaneously or view several spreadsheets at one time. Six (6) hours of instruction. Fee: 80 dollars (includes manual).
Introduction to the Internet - In this course you will be introduced to the Internet and begin "surfing" on the World Wide Web. You will learn what you need to get on the Internet including discussions about service providers, search engines, search strategies, e-mail and more. Six (6) hours of instruction. International Language Program
The Thames Valley District School Board offers several International Languages to elementary aged children attending publicly funded schools.
Weekly classes for 2.5 hours by professional, well-trained instructors
Languages are determined by the number who apply. There must be a minimum of 25 students registered for a language to be offered.

Free citizenship classes to learn Canadian history, government, geography, and rights and responsibilities. Prepares students for their citizenship interview.

NCCP Coaching Certification Program
This course will introduce and discuss such topics as the role of the coach, leadership, communication, sports psychology, motivation, growth and development, exercise, conditioning and care of injuries. Participants will receive certification in NCCP Level 1 Theory.

To Participate in this Driver Education Course
A student must be 16 years of age and posses a current Learner's (G1) Permit (or better). The Learner's Permit may only be obtained from the Ministry of Transportation, Driver Examination Centre in your area. The written beginner's test, subsequent G1 level road test and five year licensing fee is 100.00 dollars in total.
Course Outline
In-Car Training
These are concentrated training programs. Students must be prepared to be available for the in-car training phase after school hours and evenings or on Saturday's when they are not attending classroom lectures. This vehicle training will take approximately eight (8) weeks to complete. Students MUST have their G1 (beginner's licence) prior to the commencement of their in-vehicle training. Students MUST bring their G1 (beginner's lecience) with them for each in-vehicle training seesion.
This course is offered subject to adequate enrolment. If the course is cancelled as a result of insufficient enrolment, you will be given the option of having your course fee returned or applying it to the next scheduled course.
In order for the student to receive the Ministry of Transportation/Edcuation Certificate, he/she must satisfy the following course requirements:
1. Attend all lectures and in-car training sessions.
2. Obtain a minimum course mark of 72% in each of the two phases of the course (in-class & in-car).
3. Demonstrate an awareness of safe driving practices and driver competency on completion of the course.
Missed Class Room/In-car Instruction Policy:
If you miss up to two (2) sessions, you will be required to make them up during the next available session. All missed classes must be completed within one (1) year of original course date.
You cannot be deemed to have successfully completed the course if you have missed more than two (2) sessions. Exceptions may be considered by the Driver Education Program Supervisor where personal illness or other extenuating circumstances are involved.
There will be a an extra charge to those students who miss an in-vehicle training session without 24 hours notice to both the Driver Education Contact Secretary in you school and in-car instructor. Payment for any missed training sessions must be received by the contact secretary prior to the final in-vehicle training session. Exceptions may be considered by the Driver Education Program Supervisor where personal illness or other extenuating circumstances are involved.
Note:
Driver Education cars may be made available to those students who require a vehicle for their licence test upon the conclusion of the 8 month waiting period under the requirements of Graduated Licensing. We also offer an evaluation and preparation training session to those students who may wish to "fine tune" their driving skills prior to their M.T.O. road test date. THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE FOR THIS SERVICE.
A provincial government certificate is issued to each student following successful completion of the course. This certificate is accepted for insurance premium discounts and also reduces the mandatory eligibility time for a G1 exit road test at the M.T.O. testing centre from 12 months (365 days) to 8 months (245 days).
